You have two options for this tour round the Avebury monuments:
1. Guided Tour with Lionel Sims
A guided tour will be led by Lionel Sims. It will be a walk of a maximum of 6 miles (9 kms.) along roadways, footpaths and over rough pasture around the Neolithic/Early Bronze Age Avebury monuments. We can shorten the walk according to the group's wishes on how much we wish to see. Participants need to be reasonably fit and prepared for whatever weather an English summer can offer on the day. There will be frequent stops for commentary and discussion as we pass different parts of the Avebury monument complex. We will consider the main, largely archaeological, theories of the monuments and consider what insights cultural astronomy may bring to them.
2. Walk at your own pace
You may wish to go at your own pace on your own private exploration of the Avebury area and its monuments, with the proviso that you ensure your return to East Kennet Village by 17:30 to pick up the coach and return to Bath. Be warned - coach drivers don't wait, so don't be late!
Whatever option you take maps of the local monument area and of the Avebury village are provided here. Please print them off or save the link - they will not be available from Lionel Sims on the day.
The tour will go ahead no matter what the weather. Besides appropriate clothing you are strongly recommended to bring drinking water and snacks and any other lightweight personal requirements. We will be in open country for most of the day with no access to shops except when in Avebury village. Those on the guided tour will be stopping for a one hour lunch break in Avebury village around 12.30am. A pub meal or cafeteria lunch can be had in Avebury village (see street map of Avebury village). The price of lunch is not included in the payment for the trip. There is one small retail food shop and a couple of tourist shops in the village.
In the event of any problem on the day, my mobile: 0787 666 3010
Lunches can be had in the Red Lion Pub and the Circle Café. We will be re-assembling after a one hour lunch break by the duck pond just past the National Trust shop.
